Galveston’s 1900 Storm Memorial

Photo by Johnny Hanson at the Houston Chronicle.
“And as for Johnny Hanson’s photo of the 1900 Storm Memorial with a wave crashing in the background … well, the composition and inherent poignancy of the image move me beyond words. An award-winning shot, if there ever was one.”
This memorial was destroyed Sept. 13, 2008 by Hurricane Ike. :(
UPDATE - Turns out the memorial wasn’t destroyed after all.
Hurricane Ike 2008
Hurricane Ike 2008. What to say?
Our family evacuated at 11am on Thursday to Austin, Texas to my brother-in-law’s house as well as my sister-in-law’s parents house. My in-laws and Matt’s 98 year old grandmother is also with is. We are sooo thankful for Dan and Margaret and their family for taking us in and feeding us. Mason loves Mr. Jim and his fish pond.
We have been lucky to be able to spend more time with our new 5 month old niece too!
All we could do was watch TV and stay connected via web, email and Twitter, thank god.
We are so thankful to my sister and neighbors who have given us updates on our house and city. Apparently our house is fine on the outside but a down fence. No idea what the inside is like, I hope dry.
It’s Sunday night at about 11pm and our house still has no power. As soon as it does we are going home, but taking it day by day. Matt, Mason and I got to go out for a bit. For a second I thought this was a vacation but need to save money since we have no idea what supplies we may need. We went to Luby’s for dinner, took Mason to play at Zilker Park until dark, then headed to Austin Java on Barton Springs to relax. We needed the time on our own for a bit and it was a beautiful night.
This is a photo of Chevron, where I work. I’m not in this building but across the street and there are many windows out there too. I will be out of work at least until Thursday since schools are also out.
Chevron [Enron Tower] lost some windows during Hurricane Ike.
Back to more news coverage.
Miss all our Houston area friends and family and wishing the best.

I love this shot taken by my friend Jay Lee. Speechless. Breathtaking.
Not my photo but just something I found and loved on Flickr.
Lone chair
Mi Luna Restaurant
Houston, Texas
I am really digging all the wood textures here.. just a chair but I just really like this for some reason. I should have sat in the chair after I took the shot. I’m wondering what it would feel like to sit and look out the window or on to the empty restaurant. Maybe next Saturday… nah.
