Working at home

Working at home

Working at home, originally uploaded by .imelda.

This is how I work best at home. I moved one of my office tables/desks to the game room so I could watch TV too. I don’t like working in the office, too quiet.

This way I can work, keep up with other stuff on my macbook, and catch up on the DVR or Netflix. I move the table over to the wall when not in use so the kids can still play in the room. Works for me.

I thought about just putting a TV in the office but that would mean I would have to BUY a new tv and don’t want to. I would also need an extra satellite box and don’t really want to deal with that. Maybe I should just switch the office and game room?

Ramble on….

How do you work at home?

I have a home office with a large computer armoire that can be closed when I’m entertaining or don’t want to think about work - that is where I do most of my work on the computer. I also have a nice desk for handwritten communication and organizing. I keep a lot of beloved nicknacks there too. I have a small tv with cable in my office, but I rarely use it unless there is something particular going on in the news. I like that room because it has double doors that lead to the back patio and when I’m on the phone I’ll often go outside and pace around the yard while I talk, but I can easily get back to my computer. We also have a wireless network set up so that occasionally I can work in the den or the kitchen for a change of scenery. The printer is hooked up to the network so I can print from any room in the house. I love being mobile!

I moved my office to the living room, too. I turn either the stereo or the TV on while I’m working. Not sure what makes me choose one or the other. I think I may do more writing to music and more production work to the TV. Long b-grade movies or dramas are my fav because I don’t have to pay any attention. :-)

I switch back and forth between two: A coach/coffee table set up that allows me to enjoy beautiful, verdant views through the three large windows in my living room. Of course, the downfall of this setup is that it is horrible for my posture, and invariably causes my right shoulder to seize up with pain that radiates down my arm. (Hard balance there - personally enriching views versus show stopping pain.)

As a back up, I move to the dining room table and use a pillow as a makeshift “booster seat”. (I’m only 5′3″!) While there are 2 large windows in that room, the views aren’t quite as attractive as the living room - one overlooks our alley. But it’s still not bad.

I used to be huge on the TV as background music, but decided one day it cluttered my mind and kept me from focusing on all the opportunities I had before me. Do I want to do something new, or do I want to watch that episode of “The Office” for the umpteenth time? I now prefer the quiet solitude of a completely turned off, unplugged house or, occasionally, classical music softly playing on the stereo.
